Fentanyl, cocaine worth over $250K seized in Medicine Hat
Police have seized more than $250,000 in fentanyl and cocaine following a major drug trafficking investigation in Medicine Hat.
ALERT’s organized crime team in Medicine Hat recovered 800 grams of fentanyl and 1,010 grams of cocaine, along with smaller amounts of methamphetamine and cash. The drugs were seized on June 13 from a home in the Flats neighbourhood, with assistance from Medicine Hat Police Service.
“This would rank as one of the largest fentanyl seizures in Medicine Hat,” said ALERT Staff Sgt. Ryan Thorburn. “We are already seeing an impact on the drug’s supply in the community.”
Officers also seized two vehicles as offence-related property. Both the vehicles and the cash are being considered for civil forfeiture under Alberta’s victims of crime fund.
Sean Bowers, 44, of Medicine Hat, was arrested and charged with trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, and possession of a prohibited weapon. Investigators allege he was trafficking drugs across southeastern Alberta. ALERT began investigating Bowers in early June.
Two other individuals, Robert Jones, 38, and Sonya Bayes, 35, both of Medicine Hat, are each charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking. Jones and Bayes have been released and are scheduled to appear in court on July 3. Bowers remains in custody.
ALERT’s investigation is ongoing.
