RCMP charge three in Whitecourt after spike in community concerns
Whitecourt RCMP say recent arrests and investigations are part of an effort to respond directly to community concerns — particularly those around communication and transparency.
Following consultation with stakeholders and residents, RCMP in Whitecourt launched targeted patrols and have now concluded several investigations involving individuals known to police.
On May 15, officers attempted to stop a side-by-side travelling at high speed in town. The driver fled but was arrested the next day. Investigators later discovered the vehicle’s VIN had been removed. A search warrant executed with support from the General Investigation Section and Alberta RCMP Auto Theft North Division led to the seizure of stolen tools, vehicles, a trailer and the side-by-side.
Joshua Carter, 32, of Whitecourt, was charged with multiple offences under the Criminal Code and Traffic Safety Act, including possession of stolen property, flight from police and breaching court orders. He was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Whitecourt on June 24.
Also on June 6, officers arrested Chad Clark, 32, for outstanding warrants from Whitecourt and Mayerthorpe. He faces 20 Criminal Code charges and is considered a prolific offender in both communities. Clark was remanded into custody with a court date set for June 24.
That same day, RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on a dead-end road near an oilfield lease. The vehicle fled, but the suspect — identified as Michael Bergeson, 36, of Whitecourt — was later arrested and charged with two counts of failing to comply with release conditions. He was also remanded and is scheduled to appear on June 24.
