Ontario woman killed in Highway 16 pedestrian collision
A 35-year-old Ontario woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 16 near Vermilion.
Vermilion RCMP received multiple calls around 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 30 regarding a pedestrian walking on the highway. Shortly after, police, fire and EMS were dispatched to a collision in the area.
According to initial calls, the pedestrian was walking in the same direction as traffic while wearing dark-coloured clothing, making her difficult to see.
The woman, a resident of Dundas, Ont., died from her injuries.
Vermilion RCMP, with assistance from an Alberta RCMP collision reconstructionist, is continuing the investigation. Police say there is no reason to believe the collision was criminal in nature.
“This is a dreadful situation for all involved, be it the pedestrian, their family, the driver, or the emergency personnel on scene,” said Cpl. Brittany Pegg of the Vermilion RCMP. “I would like to thank the public who was travelling on Highway 16 for being respectful to all of the emergency crews who were working on scene.”
