An arrest has been made in connection with the 2019 disappearance and presumed homicide of Twyla Evans, a vulnerable woman last seen in Wetaskiwin six years ago. Evans, who was 39 at the time she went missing, was last seen in Wetaskiwin in September 2019. Her remains have not been found.

The Alberta RCMP Historical Homicide Unit announced the arrest of 49-year-old Stan Cross on June 20. He has been charged with first-degree murder.

RCMP said the case has been under active investigation since her disappearance, with recent developments leading to the charge. Cross was arrested without incident and remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear in Court of King’s Bench in Wetaskiwin on June 24.

Insp. John Spaans, officer in charge of the Wetaskiwin RCMP, called it a heartbreaking case due to Evans’ vulnerabilities. “From the onset of the investigation our Wetaskiwin RCMP officers worked closely with the Serious Crimes Branch and are grateful to see the investigation has progressed to the point where charges have been laid,” he said.

Insp. Breanne Brown with the Serious Crimes Branch credited the Historical Homicide Unit and public support. “Our team has been able to bring Stan Cross to justice for his actions against Twyla Evans and provide some answers to her family and friends. The Alberta RCMP does not stop investigating in these circumstances and our team continues to work to bring Twyla home.”

RCMP continue to encourage anyone with information to contact the Historical Homicide Unit at RCMP.KHHU-KHHU.GRC@rcmp-grc.gc.ca or 587-336-6589.
