Jaxon Paradis was as excited about his balloon as he was about the array of colourful merchandise that surrounded him. When the doors of Pincher Creek’s newest downtown business opened Monday morning, more than a dozen people were waiting in line to check out Your Dollar Store With More. Rock of Ages 2.0

It might not have been the musical but it was very close for a packed house Friday at the Pincher Creek Legion. Billed as “not your grandma’s bingo,” Banger Bingo didn’t disappoint with blaring flashback ’80s music from groups like AC/DC and Kiss, to an air guitar competition. That’s lead entertainer Shane-saw, who also doubled up as the bingo caller. Rock on!

Mustangs break through

Pincher Creek Mustangs running back Jakob Klinec (15) tries to break a tackle by Lethbridge Bulldogs lineman Sawyer Kowa during third-quarter play Saturday at Matthew Halton field. The Mustangs (1-2) picked up their first win of the season, 34-6 over the Bulldogs. They’re on the road Sept. 30 to face the Lethbridge Coyotes.

200 miles? No problem!

Looking none the worse for wear, Scott Cooper of Calgary was the first competitor to cross the finish line of the inaugural Divide 200 ultramarathon. One hundred racers started at Castle Mountain Resort and tackled a 200-mile course that included an elevation gain of about 12,335 metres (40,465 feet) in the backcountry. In next week’s issue you’ll learn how many made it back to the finish line and more about Scott’s amazing race.

The joy of literacy

Const. William Feran of Pincher Creek RCMP stopped by Canyon Elementary School last Friday to read Dolphin SOS to Grade 4 students. Const. Feran and several other volunteers read to children as part of the school’s International Literacy Day celebrations, reminding students of the importance of literacy.

Pincher Creek parties with Penner

They laughed, they sang, they danced and, most importantly, they had a good time. Children, parents and grandparents alike packed the rose garden lawn at Lebel Mansion last Wednesday for A Summer Night With Fred Penner. During the free concert, hosted by the Pincher Creek Allied Arts Council, four-time Juno Award winner Fred Penner performed a multitude of his timeless classics to an adoring crowd.

Piikani Nation held its 64th annual powwow and celebration over the August long weekend, embracing Niitsitapii culture and Blackfoot heritage. The weekend’s events included traditional powwow dancing, warrior relay races, a youth rodeo, markets and more. Pictured is a Piikani youth warrior relay jockey, preparing himself for the race. Ready to Rodeo!

Little miss sunshine Allison Red Young Man grins ear to ear as she learns to ride horses with the Piikani Youth Rodeo Club. The club met every Monday and Wednesday in July to encourage kids to get on a horse. Decked out in sunflower western wear, this little cowgirl is ready to roll for the upcoming Piikani Youth Rodeo.
