Explosive device closes Sherwood Park RCMP detachment
Strathcona County RCMP reopened their Sherwood Park detachment Tuesday after a suspected military explosive brought by a member of the public was safely removed.
The detachment was temporarily closed Monday when someone brought what appeared to be old military ordnance to the station for disposal, according to an RCMP news release.
Canadian Armed Forces personnel assisted with removing the device and normal police operations have resumed.
The incident highlights RCMP safety reminders about handling suspected explosives. Police urge anyone who finds explosives or detonators not to touch them and to contact local police immediately.
Officers will attend the location where the item is found. Disposal of explosives is provided at no cost to the public, but citizens should never move or touch suspected devices.
Providing police with a photograph and approximate age of the item can be helpful, RCMP say.
Missing persons, crime, accidents, fire, death investigations and more.
