Calgary oil and gas manufacturer fined $125,000 for worker injury
A Calgary oil and gas equipment manufacturer was fined $125,000 after a worker was seriously injured by moving machinery parts at the company’s facility.
Steelhaus Technologies Inc. pleaded guilty July 30 in Calgary Court of Justice to failing to provide safeguards when a worker could come into contact with moving equipment or machinery parts, according to an Aug. 5 government announcement.
The charges stem from an incident at the company’s Calgary manufacturing facility on May 27, 2023, when a worker was seriously injured while using a computer numerical control lathe for finishing polishing work.
The company was fined $125,000 including the 20 per cent victim fine surcharge. The Crown withdrew eight other counts against the employer.
Both the company and Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalties.
Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety laws establish basic health and safety rules for workplaces across the province. They provide guidance for employers to ensure workplaces are as safe as possible while providing rights and protections for workers.
Charges under OHS laws may be laid when failing to follow safety rules results in a fatality or serious injury.
Sentence documents are available through Calgary Court of Justice. The government does not provide these documents directly.
