Red Deer RCMP removed five drivers from the roads on New Year’s Eve as part of their ongoing holiday impaired driving campaign.

Officers stopped 210 vehicles during two checkstops and city-wide patrols Dec. 31, with each driver completing Mandatory Alcohol Screening.

Two drivers failed the screening and three others received 24-hour suspensions, according to Red Deer RCMP. Officers also issued 13 violation tickets, including one for failing to have insurance and another for stunting, while five drivers received written warnings.

The New Year’s Eve enforcement was part of a broader December campaign that saw officers conduct multiple checkstops over several weekends. Police stopped 680 vehicles throughout the month, resulting in 10 impaired driving charges, one graduated driver’s licence holder found driving after consuming alcohol, and 34 other violation tickets.

Red Deer RCMP thanked the public for their co-operation during checkstops and acknowledged the many sober drivers who planned ahead for safe rides home.

Traffic enforcement will continue through regular patrols and special projects beyond the holiday season, police say.
