Premier’s Mexico visit aims to boost Alberta’s $2.9B trade relationship
Premier Danielle Smith will travel to Mexico City Aug. 10-13 to promote Alberta as a secure, reliable partner in energy, agriculture and technology while strengthening trade relationships.
This marks the first official visit to Mexico by an Alberta premier since 2019, according to an Aug. 8 government announcement. Mexico is Alberta’s fourth-largest bilateral trading partner and one of the province’s fastest-growing export markets.
Smith will meet with government officials, private sector and industry leaders to encourage new investment and trade with Alberta. The mission focuses on identifying synergies in energy and agriculture sectors to leverage new market opportunities for Alberta companies.
“Alberta’s government has made a commitment to Albertans that we will pursue new opportunities, diversify our markets and secure new trade and investment ties around the globe,” Smith said. “Mexico is a valued trading partner, ally and long-time friend to our province.”
In 2024, bilateral trade between Alberta and Mexico totalled nearly $2.9 billion. Alberta exported $785.8 million worth of goods to Mexico, with top exports including meat, oil seed, plastics, energy and cereals.
The province imported approximately $2.1 billion worth of goods from Mexico, primarily machinery, iron and steel, and fruits and nuts.
Smith will champion Alberta’s strengths in agrifood, forestry, technology, tourism and manufacturing during meetings designed to capitalize on mutually beneficial growth opportunities.
The premier’s itinerary includes meeting with Cameron Mackey, Canada’s ambassador to Mexico, as well as Canadian and Mexican companies in energy, food and financial sectors.
She will also participate in roundtables with investors, chamber of commerce representatives and private sector leaders from Mexico’s energy, agriculture, logistics, financial and resource sectors.
Mexico is among the 15 largest economies in the world and the second-largest economy in Latin America. Alberta has maintained an international office in Mexico City since 2002 and has benefited from strong bilateral trade relationships since the 1990s under various trade agreements.
Mission expenses will be posted on the government’s travel and expense disclosure page.
