📰 A taste of what you’ll find this week in Shootin’ the Breeze

Environmental Warnings and Spiritual Action
Piikani Nation members gathered at Crowsnest Lake for a prayer ceremony after a fish advisory warned of high selenium levels. The event was a spiritual response rooted in respect for the land, water and treaty obligations — and a clear call for accountability amid legacy pollution concerns.

School Spirit and Summer Fun
St. Michael’s School unveiled a beautiful new outdoor basketball court thanks to grassroots fundraising, while the Rotary Club of Pincher Creek supported KidSport with a $1,000 donation. Meanwhile, summer programming kicks off with Nerf games, basketball, and themed kids’ camps across the community.

Coal Debate Heats Up
A tense town hall with Premier Danielle Smith in Fort Macleod drew cheers, boos and passionate questions about Alberta’s coal future. With selenium contamination and water safety under scrutiny, the evening highlighted deep community divisions and a hunger for honest dialogue.

Community in Action
Nearly 100 volunteers turned out for Ed Gregor Stewardship Day, tackling trail work, invasive weeds and riparian restoration projects. The annual event continues to foster pride, teamwork and stewardship of the public lands that define life in the Pass.

Honouring Indigenous Voices
With National Indigenous Peoples Day just around the corner, the spotlight shines on Kípaitápiiyssinnooni, a powerful new exhibit in Calgary that celebrates Blackfoot stories, language and art. Curated by Star Crop Eared Wolf, the immersive space reclaims museum space for Indigenous voices and invites all visitors to listen and learn.
