Measles Symptoms and Prevention
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through the air. Symptoms typically include:
- Fever of 38.3°C or higher
- Cough, runny nose, and/or red eyes
- A red, blotchy rash that starts behind the ears and on the face, then spreads to the body, arms, and legs. On darker skin tones, the rash may appear darker than surrounding skin or be harder to see.
AHS advises anyone developing symptoms to stay home and call Health Link at 811 before visiting any healthcare facility.
Who Is Most at Risk?
People born in or after 1970 who have received fewer than two doses of the measles vaccine are more susceptible. Special caution is urged for those who are:
- Pregnant
- Under one year of age
- Immunocompromised
- Adults without full immunization
Those in high-risk groups who believe they may have been exposed should contact Health Link immediately. They may be eligible for post-exposure prevention, such as vaccination or immune globulin.
Vaccine Availability and Immunization Records
The measles vaccine is provided free through Alberta’s public immunization program, with the first dose typically given at 12 months of age and the second at 18 months.
To check immunization history, residents can:
- Text ‘vaccine record’ to 88111
- Call Health Link at 811
- Log into My Health Record (for those aged 14+)
To book a vaccine appointment, call 811 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Calgary or Edmonton, or contact your local public health centre if you’re in another region.
