September 9 south-zone Covid-19 update
After adding 93 surge beds,
Alberta is already at 87 per cent ICU capacity;
70 per cent are Covid patients

Covid-19 Update
By Shannon Robison

Alberta Health Services is scrambling to free up space and resources for the high number of people requiring hospitalization in this fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"There have been some social media posts suggesting that emergent or urgent cancer surgeries have been delayed as a result of Covid-19 — this is not the case," reads an AHS media statement issued this afternoon.

Low-risk diagnostic cancer surgeries where cancer is suspected but not confirmed are examples of "less-urgent" cancer surgeries that may be postponed. Cases will be triaged based on priority with the most serious and urgent cases being performed first.

"Follow-up care on any suspected or confirmed cancer is taking place, as are all urgent surgeries and treatments scheduled to treat cancer," the statement concludes.

AHS announced yesterday that the Fort Macleod Health Centre Emergency Department willl be temporarily closed from 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 to 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10 as it will be without on-site physician coverage.

Nursing staff will remain on-site providing inpatient care with one local physician in the community.

Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency – calls will be re-routed to Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge. If you have non-emergency health-related questions, Health Link 811 takes calls 24/7.

Three of nine deaths reported today were in the south zone — two in Medicine Hat and one in the Oyen area.

Alberta Health Services has advised that the Crowsnest Pass Laboratory willl be closed to community patients on Monday, Sept. 13, while the lab is relocated to a temporary location, still within Crowsnest Pass Health Centre. Patients can receive lab services in Pincher Creek that day if necessary. The move is to facilitate renovations in the current location.

Alberta Health currently lists outbreaks at 22 locations in the south zone.

Statistics in this post are current as of September 8 and were updated September 9

This Covid-19 update provides details for Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and all communities in the south zone, and more general information for other zones and Alberta as a whole. It includes new cases and positivity rates, active cases, recoveries and recovery rates, hospitalizations and ICU admissions, deaths and mortality rates, R values, outbreaks, school information, immunization updates, Alberta Health video and more, compiled from Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services data.

Updates are provided every day that Alberta Health releases new data. The goal of our posts is to provide all of the detailed information in an easy-to-understand format and all in one place. Thank you for supporting our advertisers and for choosing Shootin' the Breeze as an information source.

"The zone of current hospitalization and current ICU admission are based on a patient's location of hospitalization, not the zone of patient residence. For example, a Pincher Creek resident hospitalized in Calgary is categorized as an active case in the Pincher Creek region, and their hospitalization statistic will show in the Calgary zone.

Alberta Health shares information regarding deaths as soon as it is available. There can be delays in death reporting to Alberta Health or in post-mortem confirmation of a death having Covid-19 as a contributing cause. The number reported on any given day is typically a total from multiple days."
