Covid-19 Update
By Shannon Robison

With today's update, the Pincher Creek area reaches a pandemic high of 43 active cases. The third wave peaked at 20 multiple times in May, while a high of 42 active cases were reported for Jan. 21 and 22, and 13 cases were the most active at one time in July of 2020.

Two new cases for Crowsnest Pass brings total cases so far to 100.

With 1,398 active cases of Covid-19 in the south zone, the previous daily high of 1,355 on May 7 has been surpassed. Over the past week, 822 new cases have been confirmed and the average positivity for southern Alberta is 13.4 per cent in the past seven days.

The south zone is also seeing its highest rate of hospitalization and ICU admissions of the pandemic, with 69 in hospital and 15 receiving intensive care.

Alberta officials made several announcements in a press conference this morning:

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health

Non-ICU hospitalizations have the potential to peak at 700 and ICU admissions could reach or exceed 290 in the next few weeks, causing a greater impact on the health-care system than in previous waves. Numbers could be higher if transmission rates grow.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro

New public health measures take Saturday, Sept. 4 at 8 a.m.:

• Masks are mandatory for all indoor public spaces and workplaces.

• Alcohol service at restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, nightclubs and other licensed establishments must end at 10 p.m.

• In-person contact should be limited for everyone.

• Unvaccinated Albertans are encouraged to limit indoor social gatherings to close contacts of only two cohort families up to a maximum of 10 people.

• Employers are encouraged to pause plans to have staff return to work and, instead, continue with work-from-home measures.

• If employees are working on location, they must mask for all indoor settings except in workstations where two-metre physical distancing or adequate physical barriers are in place.

Dr. Verna Yiu, president of Alberta Health Services

Non-urgent surgeries and procedures will be postponed across all zones due to building pressure on the health care system with the rapid increase in ICU admissions.

All affected patients will be contacted directly by AHS. In the south zone, this includes up to 30 per cent of scheduled surgeries, endoscopy and outpatient visits.

Premier Jason Kenney

“If you just haven’t gotten around to it, for the love of God please get vaccinated now, and if you do we will now pay you $100,” said Premier Jason Kenney in a press conference this morning.

Saying that "no stone has been left unturned" in efforts to get more people vaccinated after announcing that Alberta is the first province to offer a personal monetary incentive "to step up and do the right thing" and says it will be a money-saver in the end for taxpayers.

Statistics in this post are current as of September 2 and were updated September 3

This Covid-19 update provides details for Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and all communities in the south zone, and more general information for other zones and Alberta as a whole. It includes new cases and positivity rates, active cases, recoveries and recovery rates, hospitalizations and ICU admissions, deaths and mortality rates, R values, outbreaks, school information, immunization updates, Alberta Health video and more, compiled from Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services data.

Updates are provided every day that Alberta Health releases new data. The goal of our posts is to provide all of the detailed information in an easy-to-understand format and all in one place. Thank you for supporting our advertisers and for choosing Shootin' the Breeze as an information source.

"The zone of current hospitalization and current ICU admission are based on a patient's location of hospitalization, not the zone of patient residence. For example, a Pincher Creek resident hospitalized in Calgary is categorized as an active case in the Pincher Creek region, and their hospitalization statistic will show in the Calgary zone.

Alberta Health shares information regarding deaths as soon as it is available. There can be delays in death reporting to Alberta Health or in post-mortem confirmation of a death having Covid-19 as a contributing cause. The number reported on any given day is typically a total from multiple days."
