Pincher Creek area reports 15th Covid-related death
Wednesday, 18 May 2022. Posted in Shootin' the Breeze

New confirmed cases of Covid-19 are down considerably in the May 10 to 16 update.
Jason Copping, Alberta's Minister of Health, said in a press conference Tuesday that Covid-19 transmission continues to trend downward, with almost all wastewater sites trending down and a slightly lower positivity rate for the province.
The Pincher Creek area continues to report the highest number of new cases per capita in the south zone but is no longer in the provincial top 10. Fort Macleod and the MD of Taber have moved into second and third, respectively, in the zone.
The MD of Taber and County of Newell were the only southern areas seeing more new cases than in the previous reporting week.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, gave a reminder on Tuesday that the number of new cases and lab positivity rates typically fall first when waves of the virus wane, followed by hospitalizations and lastly by deaths.
"This is why these high numbers of deaths in the past weeks – as well as this week – is not unexpected, although it is a tragic reminder of the severe impacts of this virus," she said in the media briefing.
"As we’re seeing positivity and hospitalizations begin to decline consistently, we should expect to see the same thing in the number of deaths very soon."
Alberta tallied 3,106 new lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19 from May 10 to 16 — 937 less than in the last reporting period.
173 of those were in the south zone, where fewer new cases were reported this week over last.
The average provincial positivity rate dropped from 21 to 20 per cent while the south dropped 8 points from 26 to 18 per cent. Of note is the south zone positivity rate of 33 per cent reported on Monday, which was the highest seen all week in Alberta.
Provincial hospitalizations decreased by 60 over the previous week, while ICU admissions increased by five. Hospitalizations in the south zone are down eight and ICU admissions up one.
Two of 61 Covid-related deaths reported for the week were in the south, affecting the Pincher Creek area and the MD of Taber.
The next Covid-19 update will be available on Wednesday, May 25.

This update provides data from May 10 to 16, 2022

This is 937 fewer new cases than reported in the previous week.
Alberta Health data includes only cases confirmed through PCR lab tests. Because probable cases and positives on rapid tests are unknown and not included, the trends shown by the known numbers are more relevant than the individual numbers of new cases themselves.

Statistics in this post are current as of May 10 to 16, 2022 and were updated May. 18, 2022
This Covid-19 update provides details for Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and all communities in the south zone, and more general information for other zones and Alberta as a whole.
Updates are provided every day that Alberta Health releases new data, which is currently weekly on Wednesdays. The goal of our posts is to provide all of the detailed information in an easy-to-understand format and all in one place. Thank you for supporting our advertisers and for choosing Shootin' the Breeze as an information source.
The zone of current hospitalization and current ICU admission are based on a patient's location of hospitalization, not the zone of patient residence. For example, a Pincher Creek resident hospitalized in Calgary is categorized as an active case in the Pincher Creek region, and their hospitalization statistic will show in the Calgary zone.
Alberta Health shares information regarding deaths as soon as it is available. There can be delays in death reporting to Alberta Health or in post-mortem confirmation of a death having Covid-19 as a contributing cause. The number reported on any given day is typically a total from multiple days.

This update provides data from May 10 to 16, 2022
3,106 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Alberta through PCR testing. This brings the total number to 578,291 .
