Covid-19 Update
By Shannon Robison

Education Minister Adriana LaGrange held a press conference this afternoon to confirm that ECS and K-12 students will return to in-person learning next Monday, Jan. 10.

All schools will receive medical-grade masks and rapid tests to be distributed in a phased manner.

Each student and staff member will receive a box of five at-home rapid test kits that will allow twice-per-week testing for 2.5 weeks and a two-week supply of masks.

Requirements for masking, physical distancing, cohorting, and enhanced sanitization and hygiene practices will remain in place.

Students in grades 4 to 9 and their parents will be able to access free online tutoring resources from e-Tutoring Hub starting next week. The pre-recorded video sessions, intended to build literacy and numeracy skills, can be accessed any time.

School authorities can shift individual classes or grades to at-home learning if necessary to deal with operational challenges, and will provide input to the provincial government if decisions need to be made to shift entire schools or authorities to at-home learning.

In both situations, decisions would be based on student and/or staff absenteeism and other relevant information including local health data, if available.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, reccommends that all students, including K-3, wear masks to reduce transmission of the virus. "Next to getting vaccinated, the most critical thing we can do is stay home if we are sick — even with the mildest of symptoms," she said.

"Each day, parents must complete a health assessment of their children to see if there are any signs of illness and should do a rapid test a couple of times a week to screen for asymptomatic infection and limit the risk of introducing infection into schools," she added. "These steps are critical to limiting exposure in schools and keeping them open."

Dr. Hinshaw said reporting format for schools will change, but it is not yet known what the new presentation will look like.

Fully vaccinated individuals make up 83 per cent of new cases, 81 per cent of active cases and 50 per cent of those in hospital.

Of those 12 years and older in ICU, 71 per cent are not vaccinated.

R values were released today for the first time since mid December. All transmission indicators have increased, with the largest jump being the rest of the province outside of Calgary and Edmonton, which is at a pandemic high of 1.54.

One death was reported in the south zone yesterday, the first since Dec. 15.

Statistics in this post are current as of Jan. 4, 2022 and were updated Jan. 5, 2022

This Covid-19 update provides details for Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and all communities in the south zone, and more general information for other zones and Alberta as a whole. It includes new cases and positivity rates, active cases, recoveries and recovery rates, hospitalizations and ICU admissions, deaths and mortality rates, R values, outbreaks, school information, immunization updates, Alberta Health video and more, compiled from Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services data.

Updates are provided every day that Alberta Health releases new data. The goal of our posts is to provide all of the detailed information in an easy-to-understand format and all in one place. Thank you for supporting our advertisers and for choosing Shootin' the Breeze as an information source.

The zone of current hospitalization and current ICU admission are based on a patient's location of hospitalization, not the zone of patient residence. For example, a Pincher Creek resident hospitalized in Calgary is categorized as an active case in the Pincher Creek region, and their hospitalization statistic will show in the Calgary zone.

Alberta Health shares information regarding deaths as soon as it is available. There can be delays in death reporting to Alberta Health or in post-mortem confirmation of a death having Covid-19 as a contributing cause. The number reported on any given day is typically a total from multiple days.
