After 20 years, Crowsnest Pass’s municipal cemetery bylaw is getting an upgrade.

Crowsnest Pass council passed first reading of Bylaw 1082, which aims to amend the original bylaw written in 1992. The amendments reflect changes that have occurred in the last two decades and better align the bylaw with current cemetery processes.

In writing the bylaw, administration worked closely with Darrell Sydora of Fantin’s Funeral Chapel, who provided counsel as to current burial practices. If passed, the bylaw will apply to all cemeteries in Crowsnest Pass.

One specific change of note is that concrete grave coverings will no longer be permitted, since deteriorating covers pose challenges to ground maintenance. Existing grave covers can remain, and families who own damaged covers will be given the opportunity to repair them. The municipality will remove broken covers if no contact with family or associates can be made.

The updated bylaw will include a fee schedule that sets the costs for plots and burials. Adult and child plots will cost $700, with burials for children five and under costing $250. Cremation for adults and infants is $250 and $100, respectively.

Second and third readings will be held in August. The fee schedule and original bylaw can be viewed in the online agenda package at bit.ly/CNP_Jul6.
