August 18 Covid-19 update
Higher active cases in Pincher Creek area today
than at peak of Wave 3

Covid-19 Update
By Shannon Robison

For six days in May, the Pincher Creek area had 20 active cases of Covid-19 — yesterday that number was surpassed, with 21 cases now confirmed.

Of 829 in the south zone who are currently ill, 22 are in hospital. This represents 2.7 per cent of active cases and is a positive statistic indicating that fewer people are needing hospital care than in previous waves.

Concerning, though, is that 31.8 per cent of those hospitalized are in intensive care, indicating that nearly one in three people needing hospital treatment will be admitted to ICU. This is the same percentage seen at peak of the third wave in May when overall numbers were much higher.

Active cases by age:
35 – under one year (-1)
134 – 1 to 4 years (+3)
215 – 5 to 9 years (+21)
735 – 10 to 19 years (+28)
1829 – 20 to 29 years (+77)
1283 – 30 to 39 years (+75)
724 – 40 to 49 years (+35)
512 – 50 to 59 years (+39)
274 – 60 to 69 years (+14)
102 – 70 to 79 years (+10)
89 – 80+ years (+4)

As of August 17 there are 1,458,376 cases of Covid-19 across Canada, an increase of 1,996

34.0 per cent of new Canadian cases yesterday were in Alberta.

To date, 5.4 per cent of Albertans are confirmed to have contracted the virus.

Statistics in this post are current as of August 17 and were updated August 18

This Covid-19 update provides details for Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and all communities in the south zone, and more general information for other zones and Alberta as a whole. It includes new cases and positivity rates, active cases, recoveries and recovery rates, hospitalizations and ICU admissions, deaths and mortality rates, R values, outbreaks, school information, immunization updates, Alberta Health video and more, compiled from Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services data.

Updates are provided every day that Alberta Health releases new data. The goal of our posts is to provide all of the detailed information in an easy-to-understand format and all in one place. Thank you for supporting our advertisers and for choosing Shootin' the Breeze as an information source.

"The zone of current hospitalization and current ICU admission are based on a patient's location of hospitalization, not the zone of patient residence. For example, a Pincher Creek resident hospitalized in Calgary is categorized as an active case in the Pincher Creek region, and their hospitalization statistic will show in the Calgary zone.

Alberta Health shares information regarding deaths as soon as it is available. There can be delays in death reporting to Alberta Health or in post-mortem confirmation of a death having Covid-19 as a contributing cause. The number reported on any given day is typically a total from multiple days."
