Alberta reports nearly 35,000 active Covid cases

Covid-19 Update
By Shannon Robison

Today's Covid-19 update includes more than 34,276 active cases, leaving the previous of high of 25,438, reported on May 9, 2021, in the dust.

This number indicates only those who have been confirmed positive on PCR tests and Premier Jason Kenney said in a press conference today, "But we know that the number is actually much higher with the positivity rate of 30 per cent."

"With case counts far exceeding anything we have ever seen before, the sheer volume of cases means that daily hospitalizations are beginning to escalate," said Dr. Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health. "The population risk is high even as the individual risk is lower, and Ontario is only a little more than a week ahead of us.

Twelve Covid-related deaths have been reported since the last full update. Zone and gender information are not attached to the statistics today as a balance between protecting the privacy of the family of a child who has died and public disclosure.

The deceased are a child in the five-to-nine-year-old age group, one individual in their 30s, one in their 40s, three in their 70s and six in their 80s. None of the deaths were in the south zone.

Since the last detailed information was provided on Dec. 29, active cases in the south zone have more than doubled, with 1,132 reported today.

The zone had a positivity rate of 29.7 per cent yesterday, the highest reported since the start of the pandemic.

Waterton saw no change over the holidays, the Oyen area is the only one to have a decrease in active cases while all others went up, and Lethbridge jumped to its highest number of active cases of the pandemic.

PCR testing in the province remains reserved for high-risk groups and the recommendation is for most symtomatic people to use rapid tests.

"If you are feeling unwell, it’s quite likely because of the Omicron variant, and this means it’s critical to stay home until you are feeling better even if you have a test with a negative result," said Dr. Hinshaw.

"For those without access to rapid tests, it is still possible to book a PCR test, although even a negative PCR test does not change the need to stay home until you’re feeling better."

If your rapid test result is positive and you have symptoms, consider this as confirmation that you have Covid-19.

If unvaccinated or paritally vaccinated, you must isolate for 10 days or until symptoms resolve, whichever is longer, and are asked to notify close contact from the previous 48 hours and advise them to monitor for symptoms.

If you test positive and are fully vaccinated, isolation time is only five days, provided symptoms have fully resolved. A mask must be work when around other people for an additional five days, with no exceptions. The individual must not eat or drink in public, for example, and must keep their mask on at all times when outside their home.

The isolation time reduction does not apply to continuing care facility residents, regardless of vaccination status. These individuals must continue to isolate in their room a minimum of 10 days or until symptoms resolve.

If the test is positive and you do not have symptoms, isolate immediately and take a second test in 24 hours. If negative, isolation can end unless you develop symptoms. If the second test is positive, isolate and advise close contacts as above.

If you have symptoms and rapid test result is negative, you should isolate immediately and take a second rapid test in 24 hours. If you are negative a second time, you may cautiously resume normal activities. If positive, isolate and advise close contacts as above.

If you have no symptoms and your rapid test is negative, isolation is not required but you should continue monitoring for symptoms and follow public health guidelines.

If your test is invalid, retest until you receive a positive or negative result.

Exceptions to the recommendation to use rapid tests if Covid symptoms are present, are those living or working in high-priority settings like continuing care or health care, K-12 teachers and students, daycare staff and attendees, and individuals who are at risk of severe illness or who qualify for Sotrovimab monoclonal antibody treatment because of a clinical condition. These people should still get a PCR test, whether or not they have tested positive on a rapid test.

Free rapid test kits are available from the Pincher Creek Health Centre, Aakom-Kiyii Health Services in Piikani Nation and at the Provincial Building in Crowsnest Pass. Quantities are limited and, while supplies last, one kit per person is available every 14 days.

This Covid-19 update provides details for Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and all communities in the south zone, and more general information for other zones and Alberta as a whole. It includes new cases and positivity rates, active cases, recoveries and recovery rates, hospitalizations and ICU admissions, deaths and mortality rates, R values, outbreaks, school information, immunization updates, Alberta Health video and more, compiled from Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services data.

Updates are provided every day that Alberta Health releases new data. The goal of our posts is to provide all of the detailed information in an easy-to-understand format and all in one place. Thank you for supporting our advertisers and for choosing Shootin' the Breeze as an information source.

The zone of current hospitalization and current ICU admission are based on a patient's location of hospitalization, not the zone of patient residence. For example, a Pincher Creek resident hospitalized in Calgary is categorized as an active case in the Pincher Creek region, and their hospitalization statistic will show in the Calgary zone.

Alberta Health shares information regarding deaths as soon as it is available. There can be delays in death reporting to Alberta Health or in post-mortem confirmation of a death having Covid-19 as a contributing cause. The number reported on any given day is typically a total from multiple days.
