Active Covid cases at all-time high in south zone
Active Covid cases at all-time high in south zone

Covid-19 Update
By Shannon Robison

With the addition of 715 new Covid-19 cases over the weekend, the south zone has an all-time high of 2,328 lab-confirmed active cases.

This doesn't include positive cases confirmed through home rapid tests or those who are ill and have not been tested.

In the south zone, the Pincher Creek area, Crowsnest Pass and Lethbridge all bumped up their pandemic active-case highs over the weekend.

Six Covid-related deaths have been reported since Friday. Zone and gender information are not attached to the statistics today as a balance between protecting the privacy of the family of a youth who has died and public disclosure.

The deceased are a youth in the 10-to-18-year-old age group, an individual in their 50s, two in their 70s and two in their 80s. One of the deaths was in the south zone.

Hospitalizations in the zone increased by eight and ICU admissions by one.

PCR testing is now limited to those with clinical risk factors for severe outcomes and those who live and work in high-risk settings.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, said in her media availability today that anyone with symptoms of Covid-19 should consider that they have the virus.

"At this time, most people who have mild symptoms don't need a PCR test," she said. "For those without risk factors such as immunosuppression, they should self-isolate and manage their symptoms at home, using a rapid test if they have one."

Anyone with Covid-19 symptoms — new onset of cough or worsening chronic cough, fever, new or worsening shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, runny, nose, sore throat, loss of sense of taste or smell — should use the online assessment tool before calling 811. It can be accessed at https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/topics/Page17260.aspx

If you have symptoms, you are legally required to isolate.

If you are unvaccinated, the mandatory isolation time is 10 days or until symptoms have resolved, whichever is longer. If you are fully immunized, the mandatory isolation time is five days or until symptoms are fully resolved, whichever is longer.

Most recover without special treatment and can manage mild symptoms at home. An online self-care guide is available at https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/topics/Page17824.aspx.

See your family doctor if you have a fever higher than 39 degrees for three days, return of cough after being cough free, increasing shortness of breath or shortness of breath at rest, inability to lie down because of difficulty breathing, signs of dehydration (passing little urine or feeling lightheaded), or chronic conditions you are having difficulty managing because of Covid.

If you are symptomatic and test negative, continue to stay at home and away from other people until the symptoms get better.

PCR testing is only available to:

Continuing care residents and health-care workers and staff in acute and continuing care settings, shelters and correctional facilities who meet one or more of the following criteria:
     • need confirmation of a positive rapid test on screening
have COVID-19 symptoms
     • are part of an outbreak investigation where public health has requested lab-based PCR testing

Symptomatic household members of a person who works in continuing care or acute care.

Emergency department or hospital patients of all ages who meet one or more of the following criteria:
     • inpatients who develop new COVID-19 symptoms while in hospital
     • patients being admitted for symptoms consistent with COVID-19
     • patients in the emergency department with respiratory illness where a test will change treatment plans

Symptomatic community patients who would be eligible for Sotrovimab (monoclonal antibody) treatment if positive:
     • Those who are not immunized and are:
          • age 55 and over
          • 18 years and over with one of the following health conditions: diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or moderate to severe asthma
          • children aged 12 to 17, with referral by a pediatric I.D. specialist
          • pregnant
     • Those who are immunosuppressed (transplant, active cancer or systemic immune treatment), regardless if immunized or not.

People from isolated and remote First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities, and individuals travelling to these communities for work.

Asymptomatic continuing care residents returning/readmitted from other health-care settings.

Pediatric and adult asymptomatic transplant donors and recipients, prior to transplant.

Pediatric and adult oncology patients, prior to commencing chemotherapy.

Newborns born to COVID-19-positive parents.

Returning international travellers who become symptomatic within 14 days after their arrival.

Statistics in this post are current as of Jan. 7 - 9, 2022 and were updated Jan. 13, 2022

This Covid-19 update provides details for Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and all communities in the south zone, and more general information for other zones and Alberta as a whole. It includes new cases and positivity rates, active cases, recoveries and recovery rates, hospitalizations and ICU admissions, deaths and mortality rates, R values, outbreaks, school information, immunization updates, Alberta Health video and more, compiled from Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services data.

Updates are provided every day that Alberta Health releases new data. The goal of our posts is to provide all of the detailed information in an easy-to-understand format and all in one place. Thank you for supporting our advertisers and for choosing Shootin' the Breeze as an information source.

The zone of current hospitalization and current ICU admission are based on a patient's location of hospitalization, not the zone of patient residence. For example, a Pincher Creek resident hospitalized in Calgary is categorized as an active case in the Pincher Creek region, and their hospitalization statistic will show in the Calgary zone.

Alberta Health shares information regarding deaths as soon as it is available. There can be delays in death reporting to Alberta Health or in post-mortem confirmation of a death having Covid-19 as a contributing cause. The number reported on any given day is typically a total from multiple days.
