The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a police shooting that left a man injured on the Ermineskin Cree Nation.

According to ASIRT, the incident took place the afternoon of June 24 when both plainclothes and uniformed RCMP officers responded to a report of a man with what appeared to be an improvised firearm.

When officers arrived at the residence, the man was outside and still holding the device. Police say commands were issued for him to drop it, but he did not comply. The man then engaged officers near their vehicle, at which point multiple officers discharged their firearms.

The man was struck and received medical assistance before being transported to hospital.

RCMP have provided ASIRT with video of the incident from vehicle-based Watchguard systems and body-worn cameras. The device and ammunition were found near the injured man.

The investigation remains ongoing and no further details will be released until it concludes.
