ASIRT investigates police shooting in Calgary’s southeast
An officer-involved shooting in Calgary’s Manchester industrial area is under investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) following a confrontation that left a man with multiple gunshot wounds.
According to a press release issued June 12, two plain clothed Calgary Police Service officers were travelling in an unmarked vehicle around 12:15 a.m. on June 6 when they passed a civilian vehicle with multiple occupants. One passenger allegedly displayed a handgun to the officers.
The officers followed the vehicle into Manchester, where a traffic stop was conducted with the help of marked units. A passenger fled the vehicle on foot while the other occupants complied with police commands.
Uniformed officers tracked the man approximately 300 metres to a cluster of buildings. As they exited their vehicle, one officer, armed with a handgun, opened fire and struck the man several times. A second officer was armed with a shotgun. Additional CPS members provided medical aid before the man was taken to Foothills Hospital.
A 3D-printed firearm loaded with .22 calibre ammunition was recovered from the man after the shooting.
ASIRT has confirmed one CPS officer has been designated as a subject officer. All officers involved, including the plain clothed members, were wearing activated body cameras. Footage from those cameras, along with video from the CPS helicopter HAWCS, has been submitted for review.
ASIRT continues to investigate whether the use of force was lawful. No further information will be released until the inquiry is complete.
The agency’s mandate is to independently investigate serious injuries, deaths and sensitive allegations involving police in Alberta.
