A 15-year-old Edmonton-area youth has been arrested on terrorism and child pornography charges following a months-long investigation.

The RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team arrested the youth Oct. 2. The youth was already in custody at the Edmonton Youth Offender Centre at the time.

The youth had been subject to a terrorism peace bond since February following escalatory behaviour in an earlier incident.

RCMP completed a forensic examination of the youth’s personal electronic devices and gathered evidence to support additional charges.

The youth was charged with participation in activity of terrorist group, facilitating terrorist activity, willful promotion of hatred, uttering threats, possession of child pornography, and two counts of failure to comply with sentence or disposition.

The youth remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Edmonton on Oct. 24.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act prevents any further release of information about the individual. RCMP say the criminal investigation is ongoing and they will not comment further.

Law enforcement agencies ask the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. Non-emergency tips can be reported to the RCMP National Security Information Network at 1-800-420-5805 or online at rcmp.ca/report-it.
