A Fort Chipewyan man faces assault and mischief charges after allegedly attacking a 62-year-old man with a large stick and damaging a vehicle.

According to Fort Chipewyan RCMP, officers responded at approximately 6 a.m., Aug. 2, to an assault with a weapon at a residence on Delta Drive. Police say a 36-year-old male came to the residence and caused significant damage to a parked vehicle.

The suspect then engaged in a physical altercation with a 62-year-old man outside the residence, striking him with a large stick. The victim, who knew the suspect, suffered minor injuries to his hands and shoulder.

The suspect fled before police arrived but was located a short time later and arrested without incident.

Albert Courtoreille, a resident of Fort Chipewyan, was charged with assault with a weapon and mischief over $5,000. He was remanded into custody after a judicial interim hearing and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort Chipewyan on Aug. 5.

“We would like to thank the residents of Fort Chipewyan for their continued support of the RCMP and for their shared determination in achieving safer communities,” said Sgt. Warren Davison, Fort Chipewyan RCMP Detachment Commander.
